Great Falls Tribune/greatfallstribune.com, in Great Falls, Montana, part of the USA TODAY NETWORK, has an immediate opening for a full-time News Director and dynamic leader to oversee the Great Falls newsroom. The director of content, the top position in the newsroom, is responsible for leading a team of reporters and photographers in providing high-quality content using data and analysis to zero in on the topics and issues most important to key audiences. The director will coach reporters to make strategic decisions about coverage and direct and champion investigative and First Amendment journalism. The successful candidate will be comfortable being the public face of the Great Falls Tribune and work to increase the visibility of the news organization in the city and state. The director works collaboratively on content initiatives and monitors online traffic to ensure staff members are putting their efforts into content that will be the most relevant and useful for our readers. The successful candidate will collaborate with the digital production team and design studio daily, plan content across products and platforms, and set the editorial tone. Great Falls is in the center of Montana, located east of the Rocky Mountain Front and west of the Little Belts Mountains and Little Snowy Mountains, with the Missouri River flowing through the center of the city. Great Falls is in the heart of prime bird and big game hunting access, Blue Ribbon trout fishing, downhill skiing, hiking, canoeing and kayaking and other water-based recreation access. Glacier National Park is a 2.5-hour drive to the north and Yellowstone National Park is a 3-hour drive to the south. The Bob Marshall Wilderness Complex is 60 miles west of Great Falls, offering unique opportunities for outdoor recreationists.

Responsibilities: Use reader data, insights, and team core competencies to design high-quality journalism and conversations in the topic areas that include dining, events, arts, things to do and travel. Establish and support strategic and career goals for content coaches, planners, producers and reporters. Oversee department journalism and conversations to ensure they serve reader needs, meet journalism standards and are positioned for growth. Lead team discussions to identify projects to serve readers and strengthen the Great Falls Tribune. Organize teams to host public engagement opportunities that identify and build passionate communities of readers around the department’s journalism. Seek partners within the geographic coverage area as well as nationally to support ground-breaking journalism and conversation. Contribute to newsroom-wide strategic discussions regarding the strength and sustainability of The Great Falls Tribune. Scale ideas that work in the department across the newsroom as needed and to other interested network partners. Stay abreast of evolving readership habits and journalism tools and scale relevant methods to the culture and entertainment department. Position customer service as a central tenet for success among journalists and leaders who serve readers of entertainment and cultural journalism. Requirements:
- Bachelor’s or master’s degree in communications, journalism, marketing or related field preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- More than five years of media management experience.
- Proven proficiency in applying analytics to content strategy.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills.
- Exposure to deadline-driven environment.
- Exceptional planning and organizational skills.
- Social-media and SEO knowledge.
- Self-motivation and self-direction.
- Strong grasp of journalism skills (reporting and editing) and advanced knowledge of writing, spelling, grammar, AP and local style.
